Vienna’s new business location for media and creative industries

The history of Media Quarter Marx began with two Viennese producers, who acquired a landmarked building on the premises of what used to be the Sankt Marx slaughterhouse with the assistance of ZIT. Subsequently, they renovated the building and equipped it with studios and the corresponding technology to direct and produce films, post-production work, etc.
From a real estate point of view, this initial step was an absolute success story. The media center at the Maria-Jacobi-Gasse 2 address was lovingly called “The Marx“. At the time it was completed, the building was already fully rented. It was equipped with three studios in the beginning. Today, the media center offers seven. The companies renting space there have often moved in together. In fact, some of them have temporarily moved into containers. But this was the only way in which offices could be transformed into studios.
At a very early stage, ZIT reacted to this very positive development. By acquiring the adjacent commercial property which used to belong to Gustana, it established the basis for expanding the Media Quarter Marx, and also provided an important impetus for the development of Sankt Marx as a technology and business hub.
In the year 2007, the Media Quarter Marx Errichtungs- und Verwertungsgesellschaft was set up with the private investor VBM Beteiligungsmanagement GmbH. Construction work commenced in 2009. By the end of 2010, this PPP project will enable the City of Vienna to make an additional 25,000 m² of space available. The expansion project located at the address Henneberggasse 2 - 6 offers three new studios (500 m², 100 m² and 100 m²) and a total of 3,500 m² of space, as well as the accompanying technical infrastructure for production, film-cutting and masking.
The expansion will make the network at the site even larger and more diverse.
ZIT achieved a major success in the year 2008. It was able to acquire the so-called “Parteiengebäude 3” building located at the address Karl-Farkas-Gasse 18 via the company Marx Realitäten GmbH (86% owned by ZIT). The renovation of this former administrative building was completed in August 2009, offering 1,200 m² of rentable space. It is an important step designed to relieve the burden of demand for space at the Media Quarter Marx location.
